Leveraging ISO/IEC 81346 in SAP PM & APM – Basics

This course is designed for asset managers, maintenance engineers, SAP specialists, and digital transformation leaders who are looking to unlock the full potential of SAP PM and SAP APM. If you want to move beyond traditional functional locations and equipment and start building asset models that truly support ISO 55000-based asset management, this course is for you. We will introduce you to the power of ISO/IEC 81346 and show you why structured asset models are the key to success in SAP APM.

Course Description

This introductory course provides a comprehensive overview of how ISO/IEC 81346 can be applied to build asset structures in SAP PM and APM. Participants will learn:
• The fundamental principles of reference designation systems (RDS) according to ISO/IEC 81346
• How these principles are leveraged by SAP in the concept of System Objects within APM
• The implications for asset management in line with ISO 55000, and   practical considerations when designing and maintaining these structures.

Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of ISO/IEC 81346 is required, but familiarity with SAP PM concepts (functional locations, equipment, work orders) is beneficial.
Outcomes: After completing this course, participants will:
• Understand why new asset models are necessary for advanced asset management
• Be able to describe the role of ISO/IEC 81346 in SAP APM,   recognize common pitfalls and design challenges when building asset structures
• Be equipped to take the next step towards implementing RDS-based structures in their own organizations.

Format

The course is an online course and takes place live/in real time via Zoom's meeting platform. Time The course is a total of 3 hours with two breaks of 10-15 minutes each. The breaks are taken where appropriate during the course, but approximately after 45-60 minutes. Number of seats To create a good dynamic in the group and to create space for questions, the number of places on this course is limited to 10 per course occasion. For the same reason, we also reserve the right to cancel the course if there are fewer than three (3) registered course participants.

Agenda

Introduction: Why asset models matter in asset management
• The challenge with traditional SAP PM structures
• ISO/IEC 81346 explained – reference designations made practical
• From Functional Locations to System Objects: what changes in SAP APM
• Design considerations: how to build effective structure trees
• Common mistakes and lessons learned
• Wrap-up: first steps to leveraging RDS in your SAP journey

About ISO/IEC 81346

ISO/IEC 81346 is a robust regulatory framework for designating engineering assets as a reference and thereby structuring, classifying, and assigning unique reference identities to engineering assets.

ISO/IEC 81346 is the international standard for structuring and reference designation of technical systems. It provides rules for building consistent, multi-aspect asset structures that enable organizations to classify, navigate, and manage complex facilities over their entire lifecycle..

Augmenting SAP PM with APM

SAP PM (Plant Maintenance) is the execution platform for maintenance processes – work orders, notifications, and scheduling. SAP APM (Asset Performance Management) extends these capabilities with risk-based strategies, health monitoring, and predictive analytics. In APM, asset structures are represented as System Objects – a model strongly aligned with ISO/IEC 81346 principles.
